Dear Friends and Neighbors,

The most frightening question a mother can have is, “Who will take care of my disabled child when I no longer can?” Jimmy, a 12 year old child with cerebral palsy, is the brother of one of our karate students at the United Tae Kwon Do Academy (UTA).

Each year, Martial Arts with Hearts and Bryan Klein’s UTA in Manalapan, continues to advance the cause of raising funds for various charities. Through our programs we have seen many lives changed for the better.

For the 2008 charity year, Martial Arts with Hearts and Bryan Klein’s UTA will be raising funds for ENABLE INC to benefit Jimmy and other young children. Enable is a non profit organization that provides assistance for children and adults with disabilities such as cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy. They need supporters to raise money to help with the necessary basic needs that we take for granted.

For additional insight in their role within the disabled community, please feel free to view their website www.enablenj.org.

Our job through the karate school is to try to raise enough money to help Enable construct modifications to homes for these disabled people. With the funds raised we will be providing wheelchair ramps, stair glides, and wheelchair accessible doorways. We will also be providing Enable with the funds to build handicapped equipped bathrooms and first floor bedrooms. We will also be able to provide them, with your help, a new concrete walkway so that they can easily maneuver their wheelchairs without jumping over broken up concrete. The already challenging lives of these people will be made a little easier with your assistance.

Martial Arts with Hearts and Bryan Klein’s United Tae Kwon Do Academy continue to work to help make a difference in the lives of people like the children and adults from Enable. Each and every person affected by this physical challenge has reason to hope because great advances are being made.

However, continued monetary donations are essential to help these people with special accommodations. Today, you can make an immediate difference in the life of Jimmy. I hope we can count on you to help. Please provide us with the most generous gift you can.

With grateful appreciation,

Maria Ragosa

On May 4th I will be running in the Long Branch ½ (half) Marathon with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team in Training. Since its founding in 1949, the Society has invested over $550 million in blood cancer research and has been the driving force behind some of the most significant breakthroughs in oncology treatments. This year marks the 20th anniversary of Team in Training which raises funds for the ongoing work of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

My inspiration for this run is my Mother, Jean, who was diagnosed with Lymphoma in the Spring of 2003. Over the past 5 years she has endured numerous surgeries, invasive tests and grueling treatments with the past 6 months having been especially difficult with many extended periods in the hospital for very aggressive chemotherapy. The cancer has left her disabled in one hand and the chemo and surgeries have repeatedly left her in a very weakened physical state, but this terrible disease has not left her in a weakened emotional state. I have stood by her in complete amazement, and with the utmost admiration as she battles the cancer with dignity, grace and a remarkable courage. If you met her over the past several months while she was bird watching with her grandson or cheering for her granddaughter during a tennis match, her joy for life is what would strike you - you would never guess that she is seriously ill. She is a terrific person, and a truly wonderful Mother and friend to me.

This is my third run since 2004 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma society which makes the fundraising more challenging. and I most graciously thank you for your support.

Recent Past Events and Announcements

Eric and Josh have been with the Martial Arts with Hearts http://www.mawh.org/ for the past 4 years. This year we're doing COSAC (Autism) and we will end this years fundraiser with our annual extravaganza at Brookdale College Collins Arena. This is a large demonstration of Martial Arts combining 6 Tae Kwon Do schools under the UTA (United Tae Kwon Do Assoc.).

Eric personally ran a Bowl A Thon in August which collect about $1.500. He commandeered a great bowler "Parker Bohn III" who performed all types of trick shots. It was a great event. He's hoping to do it again next year.

Please visit the website at http://www.mawh.org. for more info or email me.

One of Josh's good friends (Mike) is Autistic. He, AJ Glanzer and Mike are performing in the Pine Brook Talent Show.

I think this should be noted. It's a great idea and it will put these ideas in other campers minds which will make for better children.

Hi all,

As most of you know, Grace and Michael are martial artists, and are both blue belts in karate. Part of our karate program, is giving back to our community. Last year, Grace and Michael we’re both featured in the Examiner, our local newspaper, because Michael decided in lieu of birthday gifts, for his 5th birthday, he would accept donations to the Institute of Children with Cancer. They have both vowed that going forward, they would not accept any presents for their birthdays from their peers, and would give to the charity that they are participating with in their karate school.

This year, the charity is COSAC (Center for Outreach and Services for the Autistic Community). To date, our karate school has raised over $60,000.00. On January 27, we will be presenting COSAC with a check in that amount.

We would like to extend an invitation to all of you, your families, and anyone that you know that has been affected by autism, to come to our Martial Arts Extravaganza, at Brookdale Community College, Collins Arena, from 1-4pm on January 27th. Grace and Michael will both be participating in this demonstration. This is when we take such pride in giving back to our community and the special organizations that we participate with.

Unfortunately, Autism is prevalent in many families, with New Jersey having a higher incidence. The Journal of American Medical Association estimates that there are 1/150 births in the United States with autism and in New Jersey alone, 1/94. That is a very scary number!

We would love for you to be there to support us and COSAC, and watch this amazing presentation of karate students from all belt levels, starting from 4 years old and up, perform an awesome show, as well as, board breaking by our black belt students and bizarre stunts from our senior team and school owners (that is one that you do not want to miss)!

Please let me know if you will be able to make it and how many tickets you will need. This invitation is open to all, so if you know anyone else that might have an interest in being there please let me knows and I will give you the tickets. This is a free event.

Thank you in advance for your support.

Sincerely,

Maria Ragosa
